Gaming Laptops FAQ's

Are gaming laptops worth it?

Let's dive into the age-old debate: Are gaming laptops worth it and are laptops good for gaming?

So, you're itching to game on the go, maybe at a friend's place or while you're travelling. That's where gaming laptops come into their own, packing serious power into a portable package. No need to lug around a bulky desktop rig - just grab your laptop and go. Plus, if space is tight in your gaming setup (we get it, not everyone has a massive gaming den), a laptop saves the day. It's compact, fits neatly on your desk and you can even game from the comfort of your bed.

But, if you already have a desktop gaming PC and you’re looking to add a gaming laptop to your arsenal or you’re looking to switch from a gaming PC to a gaming laptop, before you make a purchase, let's consider the flip side. First off, let's address the elephant in the room: performance limitations. While gaming laptops pack a punch, they often can't match the raw power and customisation options of desktop rigs that you might be used to. You might not be able to crank up the settings to ultra-high or run the latest games at blazing speeds like you could with a top-of-the-line desktop setup on entry-level or mid-level gaming laptops. However, invest in a high-end gaming laptop and this won’t be an issue.

Then there's the question of upgradability. Unlike desktops, gaming laptops aren't as easy to upgrade. You're usually stuck with the components you initially purchase, which means you might find yourself itching for an upgrade sooner rather than later. If you are considering the  purchase of a gaming laptop over a gaming PC and you are hoping for future-proofed top speeds and framerates, keep this in mind. Again, with an advanced gaming laptop, this isn’t a concern as they come packed with powerful future-proofed components.

And let's not forget about cooling. Gaming laptops tend to run hot, especially during intense gaming sessions. This can lead to thermal throttling, where your laptop automatically reduces performance to prevent overheating. You might also find yourself tethered to a power outlet more often than you'd like too, especially during marathon gaming sessions. Something to think about if you plan to undertake long gaming sessions on a laptop, nothing to worry about if you are more of a casual gamer.

When it comes to gameplay, gaming laptops, while increasingly powerful, typically feature mobile variants of desktop-grade components due to space and thermal constraints, however, a premium gaming laptop with an Intel Core i9 or AMD Ryzen 9 CPU and a high-performance mobile GPU like the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 GPU can offer seriously fast and smooth gameplay.

How long do gaming laptops last?

When it comes to gaming laptop batteries, understanding their lifespan is crucial for uninterrupted gaming sessions. Here’s a breakdown of what you can expect, and some tips to keep your gaming rig juiced up:

Average Battery Life:
On average, gaming laptops offer between 3 to 6 hours of battery life under regular usage conditions. However, during intense gaming sessions, this duration significantly reduces to around 1.5 to 3 hours.

Factors Influencing Battery Life:

Gaming Intensity: The more demanding the game, the quicker your battery drains. Graphically intensive titles like Cyberpunk 2077 or Red Dead Redemption 2 can significantly reduce battery life compared to lighter games.

Display Settings: Brightness levels and refresh rates directly impact battery consumption. Lowering screen brightness and opting for lower refresh rates can extend battery life during gaming marathons.

Background Processes: Running multiple applications in the background can drain your battery faster. Close unnecessary apps and processes to conserve power for gaming.

Maximising Battery Lifespan:

Calibration: Periodically calibrating your battery helps maintain accurate power readings and prolongs its lifespan. Fully charge and discharge your battery at least once a month to keep it healthy.

Temperature Management: High temperatures can degrade battery health over time. Keep your gaming laptop in a well-ventilated area and avoid exposing it to extreme heat or cold.

Power Management Settings: Adjusting power settings, such as dimming the display and enabling power-saving modes, can extend battery life during non-gaming usage.

How much is a gaming laptop?

Entry-Level Gaming Laptops (under £1000): Perfect for beginners and budget-conscious gamers, entry-level gaming laptops offer satisfactory performance for casual gaming sessions and everyday computing tasks. While they won’t boast cutting-edge specs, they provide a decent, casual gaming experience.

Mid-Range Gaming Laptops (£1000 - £2,500): Catering to gamers seeking a balance between performance and affordability, mid-range gaming laptops offer improved hardware specifications, including faster processors, dedicated graphics cards and enhanced display features. They handle modern games smoothly and provide room for future upgrades.

High-End Gaming Laptops (£2,500 and above): Crafted for gaming enthusiasts and hardcore players, high-end gaming laptops feature top-tier components, such as powerful processors, high-refresh-rate displays, advanced cooling systems and premium build quality. These laptops deliver exceptional gaming performance and are capable of running demanding titles at maximum settings.

The cost of a gaming laptop is primarily influenced by its hardware specifications, including the processor, graphics card, RAM, storage capacity and display technology. Opting for higher-end components inevitably incurs a higher price but also delivers superior gaming performance. Gaming laptops featuring premium design aesthetics and robust build quality tend to command higher prices too. Factors such as sleek chassis, RGB lighting customisation, and durable construction contribute to the overall cost of the device.

Will a gaming laptop with the same components as a desktop PC perform the same?

Let’s go through an example: Let’s say we have a desktop Gaming PC and a Gaming Laptop  with Intel i9 processors and GeForce RTX 4080 graphics cards. The desktop PC will generally outperform the gaming laptop and here's why:

Thermal Constraints: Gaming laptops, due to their compact size and limited cooling capabilities, often struggle with heat dissipation compared to desktop PCs. High-performance components like the Intel i9 processor and RTX 4080 GPU generate a significant amount of heat during intensive gaming sessions. Desktop PCs, with larger cases and more efficient cooling solutions like liquid cooling or high-performance air cooling, can handle heat more effectively, allowing the components to maintain higher clock speeds and performance levels over extended periods.

Power Limitations: Gaming laptops are designed to balance performance with portability and battery life. To conserve power and manage heat, mobile versions of desktop components like the Intel i9 CPU and RTX 4080 GPU found in laptops are often underclocked compared to their desktop counterparts. This means that even if the hardware specifications are similar, the desktop versions of these components can operate at higher clock speeds and deliver better performance in demanding tasks like gaming.

Upgradeability and Customisation: Desktop PCs offer greater flexibility for upgrades and customisation compared to laptops. With a gaming PC, you can easily swap out components like the GPU, CPU, RAM and storage to keep up with evolving hardware requirements and performance standards. In contrast, upgrading components in a gaming laptop is often limited to RAM and storage, with the CPU and GPU typically soldered onto the motherboard, making upgrades challenging or impossible.

Peripheral Support and Connectivity: Gaming PCs offer a wider range of peripheral support and connectivity options compared to laptops. With more USB ports, expansion slots, and compatibility with various monitors and accessories, desktop setups provide a more versatile gaming experience.

While a gaming laptop with an Intel i9 processor and an RTX 4080 GPU can still deliver impressive gaming performance, especially in a portable form factor, a desktop PC with the same specifications will generally offer superior performance, thermal management, upgradeability, and peripheral support.
